The relationship between the work of art and the image is a contested one. Both are able to shed off the sticky myth of authenticity or originality only reluctantly, despite insurmountable evidence to the contrary. While the work of art is still perceived as the teleological consequence of coherent intent of the unified subject, the image continues to carry a promise of an accessible reality, whilst, in fact, bringing us further away from than closer to it. Authenticity is a growing obsession of contemporary, digitally mediated culture that, paradoxically, allays anxieties and doubts about society, politics, and selfhood.

Heterogeneous art works gathered in this exhibition share a methodological approach as they excavate myriad sources on- and offline and remediate, transfer, reconfigure, manipulate and interrupt visual information in order to divulge what lies underneath or behind their representational surface. The works on view present themselves not as static forms, but as active re-configurations of flows of images and information: By rendering the relationship between the object of art, its materiality and subjects as unstable, they create dynamic situations rather than locking a signifier to a signified. In doing so, they bring into light the infrastructures that enable their circulation and recalibrate economies of value of what is seen and what remains invisible within rapid networks of contemporary culture, economics, and politics.

Sophie Gogl, Florian Meisenberg, Julien Bismuth, Simon Lehner and Tatjana Danneberger, in differing pictorial approaches, absorb and arrest streams of signs, digested by systems of ideological coloring and the artist’s subjective perceptions to test out the productions of subjectivities, meanings as well as power therein. Sam Ekwurtzel and Katja Mater and Danneberger stretch, or, respectively, cut out time through meta-material translations and perceptual experimentations and reveal what typically remains unnoticed by the optical, accelerated eye. The transfers undertaken by CATPC are both material (3D printing to chocolate) and immaterial (historical memory) connecting to decolonial struggle with largely ignored realities of the global economic infrastructures that redeem notions of authenticity and the work of art is an active agent of.
